Short answer: a 48kg gas exchange in Pretoria costs R1,650 with Shevic Energy — delivered to your door, full sealed cylinder collected empty swapped on the spot. Read on for who it's for, what moves prices, and how it compares.
Who is the 48kg cylinder for?
- Large households — big families running gas cooking, hot water and heating off one supply.
- Restaurants & fast food outlets — high daily burn that would empty smaller bottles in days.
- Caterers & events companies — cook for hundreds without mid-event swaps.
- Businesses & institutions — guesthouses, bakeries, laundries and workshops.
If you only cook family meals, a 9kg (R350) or 19kg (R650) is usually more practical. The 48kg is heavy and best installed semi-permanently with proper ventilation.
Why do 48kg prices change?
- Global LPG price — linked to oil and international markets.
- Rand exchange rate — imports cost more when the rand weakens.
- Transport & logistics — heavy 48kg bottles cost more to move safely.
- Safety & compliance — certified filling, seals, inspections and trained handling.
Comparing 48kg suppliers in Pretoria
Don't compare on price alone. Ask:
- Price all-in? — is delivery included or added at the gate?
- Exchange vs new? — Shevic does exchange: full sealed cylinder for your empty. New bottles need a deposit — ask on WhatsApp.
- Convenience — do they deliver to your suburb, carry to your cage, work weekends?
- Reliability — do they answer, arrive when promised, keep stock?
- Safety — sealed, checked cylinders with correct fittings and advice.
How long does a 48kg bottle last?
It varies widely: a busy restaurant can finish one in weeks, while a large household using it mainly for cooking can stretch it for months. Heating and hot water are the biggest consumers. Keep a gauge or weigh the bottle, and order your swop before it runs dry.
